Shamanism

I really like the idea of having something other worldly in our show, and I think Gothic could give us a great running theme to work with alongside the secret monasteries. We discussed the influences of Shamanism in our earlier meeting, so below is a brief overview as a starting point.

shaman |ˈʃamən| |ˈʃeɪm-|
noun ( pl. -mans )
a person regarded as having access to, and influence in, the world of good
and evil spirits, esp. among some peoples of northern Asia and North America. Typically such people enter a trance state during a ritual, and practice divination and healing.

The description I like most cites Shamans as "intermediaries or messengers between the natural world and spirit worlds", it is believed that although present in the natural world, the Shaman can also exist in the spirit world, treating ailments and illnesses through the mending of the soul. I think we could really play on these concepts and come up with something very visually powerful and culturally rich.

A Shaman from an equatorial Amazonian Forest taken in 2006.
He is heavily adorned in feathers; throughout history birds are seen as messengers of the spirits and feathers are often used in ceremonies. This could be an interesting point of research too.

See you all tomorrow x
